The cosmogony/cosmology of classic Gnosticism is, on its surface, somewhat bizarre and a little difficult to digest, even a bit off- putting, sometimes.  Given the abundance of misery in much of human existence (someone once referred to human life as seventy years or so of tragedy, occasionally punctuated with enjoyment) the classic Gnostic view makes some sense when studied, although it tends to fly in the face of most standard, accepted religious views. Essentially, the world sucks because it was created by a (variously) evil/ignorant/incompetent minor creator god, given birth by a divine being (Sophia) out of her own selfishness and personal desire.  This world is so ill-conceived and badly created that its inhabitants (us) have no choice but to eke out a miserable, dreary existence.  In many schools of thought, this evil/ignorant god is actually Yahweh, the Old Testament god, who is so dense and self-centered he believes himself to be the only and supreme god of the universe.  The only way we can achieve salvation is to simply get out of here – escape the physical, which can only be achieved through inner gnosis.  In its non-Christian forms, this is taught by Seth, who is a sort of redeemer-teacher, and in Christian versions Christ (another divine being) possesses the man, Jesus, at his Baptism and vacates at the moment of crucifixion, having left behind his influence, and leaves this poor, abused rabbi to suffer and die.

Great metaphor for the human condition, but lousy theology.  As a wise Jewish sage and friend once said to me while discussing Gnosticism, “if the material world is so bad, explain sex, ribeye steaks, and single malt scotch.” An absolutist Gnostic would probably respond with a comment about those things being illusion, or as the course explains when discussing the more libertine Gnostic sects, things you should just go ahead and do anyway because physical life is an illusion and gnosis the only salvation. You are essentially “saved” if you are one of the few knowers, so your behavior and lack of moral code don’t really matter. Some people are offended by the insinuation of sexual libertinism in what we think of as their rituals, but this idea of gnosis as the only true path (and the fact that we really don’t know what they practiced ritually- we’re speculating) can explain some of these seemingly immoral sects.

The exploration of the non- Canonical Scripture is, as always, interesting, not only for it’s content (the Gospel of Thomas Didymous always remains a perennial favorite of Gnostic Christians) and the more hardcore, non- Christian Gnostic writings are, while often confusing, give an interesting analysis of what these sects taught and believed, and why.
